How to Run MT4 on Mac (M1 Pro)

Since I upgraded to the Macbook M1 Pro, I started to get this question a lot: “How do you run MT4 on Mac?”

So I decided to do a quick video to show you 3 ways that work for trading on Meta Trader 4 and it'll also work on MT5 🙂

As you'll see in the video, there are better and worse ways to use MT4/MT5 on a Mac… it's a bit more complex with the new M1 & M1 Pro chips too.

So I hope you'll appreciate it and I'll be back with a normal trading video on Sunday 👇

Video Summary – How To Run MT4 on Mac (M1 Pro)

In this video, I show you how to run MT4 on Mac. Having a new Macbook M1 Pro, I realized MT4 wasn't really adapted for it. So I show you 3 ways you can trade on MT4 or MT5 with a Macbook.

Way #1: Use Native MT4 and MT5 versions

This is a very simple way to run MT4 on Mac.

You simply need to download (fairly recent) versions of Meta Trader 4 or Meta Trader 5 made for Mac.

Here are links so you can easily find them:

The biggest downside to running MT4 on Mac natively is that those versions are not very well updated. You might see frequently a popup that says “Meta Trader 4 needs to be updated”, and that's quite annoying.

Way #2: Run MT4 on Mac through Parallels

First off, Parallels is a software I recommend for all Mac owners who need to run Windows-only applications on their Mac.

You can simply buy Parallels, install any Windows software you want, and get the same interface you'd get on a brand new PC.

For me, MT5 works great in Parallels.

However, due to the M1 Pro chip, you won't be able to launch MT4. Quite a bummer, but MT5 on Parallels looks more modern than MT5 native on Mac, so this is still my preferred way for manual trading.

Way #3: Run MT4 through a VPS

A virtual private server (VPS) is essentially a computer that runs all the time 24/7.

The really cool thing about it is that you're able to run MT4 anytime you want 🙂

Power this with algos that run on MT4, it can pretty much automate your whole trading.

A VPS makes it possible for your algo on MT4 or MT5 to take trades for you even while you sleep!

Sure you could leave your own computer running at night, but that's not very practical, nor is it reliable.

For me as a semi-algo trader, a VPS is essential to have.

I installed Meta Trader 4 on that VPS and added my algos to it.

Just to be clear, I don't recommend using a VPS for manual trading as there's a bit of lag.

This is only the best option if you want MT4 to run even when your Mac or laptop is closed.

The VPS provider has a few options for Forex traders specifically.
